Africa Calling the World

In association with VCCA-2022 the organising committee of the Virtual Winter School on Computational Chemistry will be holding a one-day satellite symposium on Friday August 5. This one-day event will be hosted in the VWSCC's space, kindly sponsored by Gather, and will be a condensed version of our annual VWSCC event, focusing on showcasing African science to the rest of the world. Since 2015 through VWSCC we have endeavoured to bring our speakers to the rest of the world virtually. In this event we hope the global community will come to see what is happening in Africa. The day will be a mixture of invited talks, poster presentations and panel discussions on topics such as getting jobs, forming collaborations, computing resources, education…

The format of the day (in CEST/CAT) will be:

09:00 - 09:15 Welcome by Mark Casida
09:15 - 09:45 Anne Etindele "A density functional theory practical modeling of singlet oxygen molecule with multiplets sum method"
09:45 - 10:15 Kamel Alimi "DFT Exploration of Property-Structure Correlations for Materials in Organic Solar Cells"
10:15 - 10:45 Lucy Kiriuri "Drug repurposing for SARS-CoV-2 main protease: Molecular docking and molecular dynamics investigations"
10:45 - 11:15 Hitler Louis "Quantum Chemistry: From Obituary to Glory"
11:15 - 11:45 Samar Mahmoud "Applying a Global Deep Learning Model for Global Health Drug Discovery"
11:45 - 12:15 Adedapo Adeyinka "The Influence of Central Metal ion on the Activity of Alkane Oxidation Catalysts"
12:15 - 14:00 Break
14:00 - 14.45 Panel discussion on Computational Resources with Dominique BuyensKrishna Govender, Winfred Mulwa
14:45 - 15.30 Panel discussion on Human Dimensions with Edet ArchbongCollins Edet , Dominique Buyens,  Winfred MulwaLucy Kiriuri
15:30 - 17:00 Break
17:00 - 18:00 Single Figure Presentations

SFPs (single figure presentations) submissions are particularly encouraged from researchers working at African institutions, especially students. You will be given the opportunity to give a flash presentation of your work in our virtual poster room and mingle with other attendees. There will be prizes of speaking slots at the next edition of the Virtual Winter School and everyone who presents will get certificate of attendance. The deadline for submission of SFPs is 03.08.2022.

Everyone is welcome to participate and we hope to see representation from as many countries as possible.

Registration is free, but mandatory. There are two ways to register depending if you are already registered at the Virtual Winter School on Computational Chemistry or not:

  1. You are registered at VWSCC: go to your profile, click edit profile and there choose that you would like to attend Africa Calling Symposium (direct link to you Edit Profile page can be found here).
  2. You are not registered at VWSCC: register for the VWCSS and during the registration choose that you would like to attend Africa Calling Symposium (direct link to Registration form can be found here).

Please feel free to spread the word to your colleagues!!!
